Freeburn Residence

Los Altos, CA

The houses in this Los Altos neighborhood were renovated or replaced one by one in recent years. This home, in comparison to the other new builds, was exemplary in its design and moved away from the common ranch style homes in the neighborhood towards a contemporary California living style home. The design includes vaulted ceilings to boost interior space, with windows high up on the walls to bring in light while affording privacy. As an added design bonus, Maurice took advantage of the tall trees in the neighbors' yards to fill the upper window views. Dave Freeburn, a general contractor, built the home as a spec house. He and his wife Rhonda liked the house so well that they lived in it for five years before selling it!

"The right architect can be a homeowner's best friend. His or her knowledge of energy use, building materials, and labor costs can save you more than enough money to cover their fee, and an original, well designed house — one that is strong, functional, and responsive to its site — is a daily joy as well as a good investment."
